Under Cora's direction, the reaping crews cut across the upper slopes and drained lower beds as the barley hardened to peak maturity. Working methodically behind the scythes and sickles, binding teams erected upright stooks capped against sudden weather. Despite late summer storm clouds threatening rain, continuous ditch monitoring by Bran’s crew and the protective capping prevented storm damage and waterlogging across the fields.
At the communal threshing barn, processing proceeded in disciplined shifts under Ada's oversight. The grain was threshed and winnowed clean of chaff. From the dried yield, exactly thirty of the ceramic restitution jars staged in the communal loft were filled and sealed with fitted lids:
- Seed Reserve: Fifteen jars were packed with dense, selected prime seed barley and sealed tight, guaranteeing seed independence for the coming spring.
- Food Reserve: Fifteen jars were filled with clean grain and sealed as a multi-season emergency reserve against future lean years.

At the weighing floor, Barleybank’s delivery of threshed grain was placed onto the standard beam scales before Convenor Belen, Junior Keeper Sella, Keeper Oren, and Pia of Hearthmere. The tallies were verified true against the house ledger, with all parties signing off on the weights without dispute.
In exchange, Barleybank took custody of the thirty-five calibrated ceramic grain storage jars and fifteen fired roof-ridge tiles staged by Hearthmere. The goods were loaded into straw-padded carts and brought home without incident, settling the secondary contract in full. Dain and his helpers have already begun staging the ridge tiles to reinforce the communal storehouse roof against autumn gales and winter freeze.
Activation of the Measure Valley Exchange Commons
Six months after winter shortages, uncertified weights, and flooded ditches brought the valley to the edge of distrust, regional relations have reached a lasting resolution. Through witnessed reweighings, shared tally custody, Hearthmere’s delivery of restitution ceramics, and completed harvest trades, the four communities of Measure Valley have formally established the Measure Valley Exchange Commons.
Interdependence across the valley is now sustained by open roads, verified standard weights, and demonstrated integrity among all four settlements.
