The Secondary Contract Settled at Measure House

At Measure House, the regional trade accord reached its full and orderly conclusion. Ada, Esme, and Dain arrived from Barleybank with their community's contracted harvest grain. In the presence of Convenor Belen, Junior Keeper Sella, Keeper Oren, and Hearthmere's witness Pia, the grain deliveries were verified against the certified balance and standard stones.

With tallies reconciled and entered into the duplicate registers, Barleybank took formal custody of the 35 standardized ceramic jars and 15 curved roof-ridge tiles staged by Hearthmere. The exchange formally extinguished all remaining obligations under the secondary accord, settling the seasonal balance between the two settlements with witnessed precision.

Grain Arrival, Domestic Craft, and Timber Reserves

Following the settlement at the scales, the threshed grain consignment was loaded and barged down the riverway, arriving safely at Hearthmere’s landing. Mela and the storehouse crews received the bulk grain directly into clean, sanitized storehouses, binning and potting the harvest into dry ceramic jars without loss.

Throughout the settlement, domestic industry shifted to secure the coming cold season:

• Kilns and Craft: With export quotas satisfied, Kira and Lorn turned the communal kilns inward. Firings produced curved roof tiles to reinforce domestic quarters and workshops, alongside specialized narrow-necked seed crocks designed to protect winter seed reserves.
• Sheltered Timber: Before late-summer rains could soak the open drying racks, Noll’s crews moved the cured hardwood off the cribs and stacked it under tiled, open-sided lean-tos. The dry fuel reserve now sits sheltered above the ground on stone footings, protected from sudden cloudbursts and ready for autumn and winter firing.

Harvest Thanksgiving and Household Dignity

With the granaries replenished and the ledger clean, Hearthmere gathered around the communal hearths for a feast of thanksgiving. Loaves baked in Kira’s repaired ovens were broken alongside garden harvests and fresh pottage.

The eighteen households that had relied on emergency grain during the midwinter lean shared fully and equally in the feast and the harvest rations. Having contributed their labor throughout the spring and summer to clay preparation, fuel hauling, and tile setting, their standing within the community stands fully restored. There are no outstanding favors or lingering debts hanging over their homes.

The Measure Valley Exchange Commons

Beyond Hearthmere’s clay terraces, the broader valley has reached a shared milestone. Through six continuous months of witnessed weighing, shared custody, fulfillment of restitution, and regional cooperation across water and road, the four communities of Measure Valley have formally activated the Measure Valley Exchange Commons. Mutual trade now operates on verified trust, agreed standards, and open transit across the region.

Immediate Realities and Autumn Considerations

As summer ends and the valley turns toward autumn, Hearthmere enters the new season in a position of stability:

• Storage and Maintenance: Storehouses are stocked and dry, though periodic checks on grain seals and moisture will be needed as autumn damp approaches.
• Fuel Balance: While a substantial store of cured wood is safely sheltered, maintaining a steady rotation of split green hardwood will be necessary to ensure seasoned stock for next spring.
• Regional Exchange: With the initial restitution and harvest contracts complete, future trade through the Measure Valley Exchange Commons will depend on new agreements, seasonal labor allocations, and ongoing coordination with neighboring communities.
